Redwood Trade Guide

California Contractor License Study Guide

The Board publishes one study guide per license classification, plus one for the Law and Business exam, and states plainly what each one contains: a topic breakdown, sample questions, study resources and test strategy. That is the source material every commercial summary is built from, and it is free.

What CSLB says the guides are for

CSLB’s own framing is direct: “If you are required to take a trade and/or law examination for licensure, you can prepare for the examinations by reviewing the applicable examination study guides” (Examination Study Guides). The guides are the primary source, pointed to as the thing to review rather than as one option among several.

What each guide contains

CSLB lists the same four contents for every guide it links to: “A breakdown of examination topics”; “Sample examination questions”; “Resource information to help you study for the examination”; and test strategy (Examination Study Guides). A topic breakdown says what the exam draws on. Sample questions show the form the questions take. Resource information and test strategy are general study material rather than a rehearsal of the real thing.

One guide per classification, and a separate one for Law and Business

CSLB organizes the guides by classification and exam type: “The list below provides a study guide link for each license classification and for the Law & Business examination” (Examination Study Guides). That mirrors the exam structure itself. Licensure runs on two examinations: a trade paper tied to the classification, and a separate Law and Business paper. Both are confirmed on CSLB’s own applicant page (CSLB). The Law and Business guide is the same regardless of classification. The trade guide is not. That is why the classification applied for is decided first — see how the classifications divide.

What the guide gives you, and what it does not

The guide tells you what the exam covers and shows you the shape of a question. Turning that into a week-by-week plan, or working through enough sample questions to feel ready, is a separate task from reading the guide itself — and it is the task a paid prep course is built to do.

Prepare for California's two license exams

Licensure here requires passing two exams — law and business, plus a trade exam for your classification, with C-61 Limited Specialty exempt from the trade paper and waivers decided on review. That is the Board's own statement of the requirement. RocketCert sells contractor exam-prep courses — check that a course covers California, and these exams, before buying.

What is not in CSLB’s own description

CSLB’s page describes what the guides contain, not what is inside them page by page. The guides themselves are PDFs, one per classification, and nothing on CSLB’s applicant pages states the exam’s format, timing or passing score. None of that appears here, because none of it has been published where this site can verify it. For the wider picture of preparing — what to do before you have applied, and what else remains unconfirmed — see exam prep.

Where the guides fit

The exam is one requirement among several. The full application sequence is at applying for a classification, and everything an applicant must satisfy is covered as a whole at what an applicant must satisfy. For the wider California contractor license picture, that overview is the place to start.
